Welcome
to third grade!
Third
grade is a big year of growth and we do a lot of hard work! Third grade is the year where students
move from learning to read to reading to learn. In third grade we teach reading and writing through reading
and writing workshops where we will have the opportunity to read, read, read
and write, write, write. In
writing we learn how to write personal narratives, persuasive speeches,
non-fiction reports, and fairy tales.
In reading we study reading skills such as retelling, predicting, and inferring. We learn to read non-fiction and we
have book clubs.
The
Everyday Math program continues in third grade. This year there are some very tricky new math concepts, so
homework practice will be very important.
We will learn multiplication, multi-digit addition and subtraction,
fractions and even decimals!
In
Science and Social Studies we have lots of opportunities to do fun and exciting
hands on projects. We will study
the earth, landforms and mapping; weather and water; motion and design; Native
Americans; and the town of Kittery.
At the end of the year when we study the town of Kittery we will go on
field trips all over town.
